Harmer’s Prediction, Rabada’s Burst and South Africa’s 2-1 Series Win at Newlands
At Newlands, Simon Harmer’s off-spinner to Josh Hazlewood was more than the final wicket of Australia’s innings. It was the completion of a prediction he had made earlier. The ball landed on leg stump, turned away from the left-hander and clipped middle and off. Hazlewood was out, Australia were bowled out for 111, and South Africa won by 176 runs to take the series 2-1. Harmer finished with six for 16 from 21.1 overs in the second innings and 10 for 120 in the match, his maiden ten-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Harmer had told SEN Cricket that a lead of 120 would be defendable, 150 would be par and anything above 200 would be gold. His own spell made that assessment look precise. South Africa had made 329 in the first innings, built by half-centuries from Aiden Markram, Marques Ackerman and David Bedingham. Australia replied with 429, thanks to Josh Inglis’s century and Alex Carey’s 80 off 168 balls, taking a 100-run first-innings lead.
South Africa stumbled to 95 for three in their second innings, but Ryan Rickelton made 101 off 219 balls and Wiaan Mulder made 115 off 221. That recovery set Australia a target of 288. On the final morning, Kagiso Rabada removed Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne in the opening over, and Travis Head followed soon after. The collapse opened the way for Harmer, who bowled with relentless accuracy and subtle changes of flight and trajectory.
Harmer said after the match that the wicket had not offered as much turn as expected on days four and five. He said he kept asking himself whether he had bowled well enough, and that in Port Elizabeth he had been desperate for wickets. Here, he tried to bowl with control in the first innings and then exploit conditions in the second. The simplicity of his approach was the key to his success.
Rabada’s burst gave South Africa the early breakthrough, and Harmer finished the job. Australia never recovered from the loss of their top order and were dismissed for 111. South Africa’s victory was a complete team effort: the top three set up the first innings, Rickelton and Mulder rescued the second, Rabada struck early and Harmer ran through the middle and lower order. The win gave South Africa a 2-1 series victory and underlined the value of a balanced attack on a surface that assisted spin later in the match.
