Peres Jepchirchir Provisionally Suspended for EPO: Olympic Champion’s Sydney Marathon Win Under Shadow
Olympic and world marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after an out-of-competition sample tested positive for EPO. The 33-year-old Kenyan gave the sample before winning the Sydney Marathon on 30 August 2026, where she clocked 2 hours 18 minutes 31 seconds. She won the race by more than three minutes from compatriot Irene Chepet Cheptai.
The AIU said the sample was collected in Kenya before the Sydney race. A provisional suspension is not a final finding of guilt. It is a procedural step that keeps an athlete out of competition while the case is investigated. Jepchirchir will have the opportunity to respond and present her case under the anti-doping process.
EPO, or erythropoietin, is a hormone naturally produced in the kidneys that stimulates the creation of new red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the muscles. When EPO is injected, it can increase the number of red blood cells and potentially improve endurance. It is banned in sport, and its detection window in urine or blood is limited, making out-of-competition testing important.
Jepchirchir became the Olympic women’s marathon champion at the 2026 Tokyo Olympics and returned to Tokyo to win the World Championships in September 2026. She broke the women’s half-marathon world record in 2026 and improved it three times in 2026. Her major marathon wins include New York in 2026, Boston in 2026, London in 2026 and Sydney in 2026. Sydney became the seventh world major in 2026.
The case has cast a shadow over one of the sport’s biggest stars and over a newly elevated world major. If a violation is confirmed, the Sydney result, title and prize money could be affected. However, no final conclusion should be drawn before the process is complete. The AIU’s next steps, including any confirmation testing and hearing, will determine the outcome. Until then, Jepchirchir remains provisionally suspended and the sport awaits clarity.
